Mycenae is located on a low hill overlooking the Argolic plain, near the main road

leading from the Argolic Gulf to the north (Corinth, Athens, etc.).

The hill was inhabited since the Neolithic period, but it experienced its peak during the

Late Bronze Age (1350-1200 BC), giving its name to a civilization that spread throughout the Greek territory. Impressive Cyclopean walls surround the acropolis, except for the southern side where a steep ravine provides natural defense.

The walls were built in three phases (circa 1350 BC, 1250 BC, and 1225 BC).

The fortified acropolis included the palaces, with the core being the so-called "megaron", where the "throne room" was located. Here, the monumental "Lions Gate" dominates, while the "Grave Circle A" was included in the protective enclosure of the acropolis walls. It contains royal shaft graves, which, along with the extra-mural "Grave Circle B" and the tholos tombs, yielded the treasure of finds that are now exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum and the local Archaeological Museum of Mycenae.

Nafplio was the first capital of the independent Greek state after the revolution of 1821.

From 1829 to 1834, the city served as the central political, cultural, and economic

capital of Greece.

Nafplio is known for its beautiful Venetian fortress of Palamidi, located on a hill above

the city. The city is also surrounded by the Palace of the Argos, which served as the

residence of the first Greek kings.

Overall, Nafplio is a unique destination that combines history, culture, and natural

beauty. It is a place that offers a unique experience for visitors, showcasing Greece's

rich heritage and authentic hospitality.
